There are times when music can move me to tears. There is also music that can make my pulse quicken and bring a sense of childhood excitement to the front of my psyche. For me, the Star Wars main theme, played at the beginning of every movie of the franchise, does just that. Each and every time.
This entry is made on the wake of losing one of the most beloved characters from the Star Wars saga, Carrie Fisher, who played Princess Leia. The role she played would remain with her, for better or for worse, for a lifetime, and made a huge impact on me when I was growing up. Her character in this series was sassy, empowered and capable, all traits that I admire in the women I have come to know throughout my life. These are also traits that I continue to strive for personally and that I blend into the characters I develop. In a way, I suppose, Carrie has acted as my muse.
I believe her spunk was genetic, how could it not be with Debbie Reynolds as her mother? Sadly, we lost her the day after Carrie’s death, at the tail end of 2016 – a year during which many talented and memorable artists passed on. When I think about how people that we don’t know can affect us in profound and beautiful ways by the work they create, it makes me glad that writing has finally found its way back into my life.
I would like to thank all artists, musicians, writers, dancers, and actors for their creative force, and for touching our hearts in a deep and meaningful way. For me, this soundtrack represents my childhood, but it also represents hope. Hope that creativity will live on and continue to inspire people to be the best versions of themselves. Hope that along the way we will learn to co-exist. And, hope that Carrie and Debbie are dancing and singing among the stars. RIP Ladies…you will be missed.
